POLPO Exeter

POLPO is a bàcaro. This is a Venetian word to describe a humble restaurant serving simple food and good, young Italian wines. They offer tasty small plates, Prosecco and spritz in a setting that reflects the gloriously faded elegance of Venice. POLPO feels rustic and stripped back; modelled on the scruffy, but charming, backstreet wine bars of Venice.

Open for all day dining, signature dishes on the menu include cicheti, such as fried stuffed olives; arancini and potato and Parmesan crocchette. There are a host of small plates to choose from too, such as fritto misto, pizza bianca and spicy pork and fennel meatballs, while the dessert list requires some tough decision-making with delights such as affogato al caffe, flourless chocolate and hazelnut cake and tiramisu pot.

In addition to the main menu, the all-day ‘osteria’ menu is available every day from 11.30am until 6pm. It is perfect for great value dining, priced at just £10.90 for two courses and £13.90 for three courses. There are also daily-changing specials to look out for, so be sure to check the blackboard!

POLPO revels in the Venetian tradition of aperitivo and will be serving Spritz, Campari, Aperol, Negronis and Bellinis all day long. The exclusively Italian wine list begins with POLPO’s own label wines, and cocktails include Elderflower Martinis and Cynar Gin Fizz. Aperitivo Time takes place every day from 4-6pm. Sip on a refreshing spritz and enjoy some delicious bar snacks like black truffle crisps & Bella di Cerignola olives, for just £5.

There is a comprehensive breakfast and coffee menu, to eat in or take-away, served from 8am every morning.  Choose from a selection of paninis, pastries and cakes as well as a grilled cheese, red onion and thyme sandwich on sourdough and a broad bean, ricotta and mint bruschetta. Also, be sure not to miss the star of the show – POLPO’s Venetian doughnuts. One of those with your coffee is the very best start to your day.

Unique features for Exeter include a fully open kitchen, where customers can see their food being prepared from scratch no matter where they are seated in the restaurant or bar.

POLPO has their own cookbook.

“Wonderfully fresh flavours... inherently satisfying dishes; staff are cool and calm and the atmosphere terrific.” MICHELIN GUIDE 2016
