A special one day event for Heritage Open Days inviting a closer look at Marcus Vergette’s artworks in the Recalibration
exhibition and the book that inspired them – Robert Hooke’s 17th work on microscopy, Micrographia
Micrographia Robert Hooke's celebrated 17th century book on microscopy expanded our understanding of the natural world by
revealing details that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Artist Marcus Vergette has been inspired by Hooke’s playfulness and
way of looking at the micro scale. His printed works and hand drawn maps that are on display in the Recalibration exhibition
invite us to tune in to details in the natural world and notice different perspectives and relationships.
Micrographia will be on temporary display in the Recalibration exhibition alongside Vergette’s work, by kind permission of the
Dean and Chapter, Exeter Cathedral.
Master printmaker Simon Marsh will demonstrate the heritage craft of letterpress printing.
Visitors will have a chance to look at natural objects under a microscope, engage in conversation with artist Marcus Vergette
and entomologist Rob Wolton about what we notice when we look in detail, and our relationship with insects as vital pollinators
in our food chain and as food sources themselves.
Micrographia specialist Dr Felicity Henderson, Senior Lecturer in Archives and Material Culture at the University of Exeter will
join a recorded discussion that will be available online after the event.
