SAILS & CANVAS - The Art of Repurposing Sailcloth

Friends since childhood, Juliette and Mandi set up Sails and Canvas in June 2015 and for them it’s all about the sailcloth and the story of the sail.  

“We have a passion for old sails – they come to us after a life of adventure often smelling of the sea and crusty with salt; they have been loved by their owners and then we give them a new life and pass on that love. Our original sailcloth & colourful marine canvas lifestyle products are hand made in our estuary sail loft workshop on Topsham Quay in Devon.  Every sail we use means less sailcloth ends its life in landfill and that is our other passion...reduce, reuse, recycle ♻️

We are contacted by people all over the country who want to recycle their old sails...it is difficult to dispose of them in some areas and they are totally non-biodegradable.  People like the idea that their sails will go on to have a new life and adventures! When they arrive, we strip out any rope & remove metal work before cutting the sails into manageable sizes for washing. Then we use the sailcloth according to its weight & suitability for each product type...heavier weight Dacron is great for deckchairs and storage buckets whereas the lighter weight sails make beautiful beach bags, shoppers and kit bags. We try to use as much of the sail as possible finishing up the smallest pieces for doorstops & sunglass cases.”

Sails and Canvas products can be personalised with a favourite colour star, numbers or initials.  Their most popular products being the Family @ The Beach bag (pictured), wash bags and kids mini buckets.
