About

Montagefire Theatre presents a spirited reading of Charles Dickens groundbreaking ghost story The Signalman with Lee Rawlings. With an introduction and some extra ghostly tales.
In full Dickensian style storyteller Lee Rawlings performs Charles Dickens's ghost story The Signalman. Inspired by the writer's own terrifying experience and based around a real railway tunnel with its own spooky tales, this short story is a creepy and shocking experience with a truly memorable ending.

The Signalman was first published in the 1866 Christmas edition of the magazine All The Year Round and has become a staple of ghost story readings at Halloween and Christmas.
The story has inspired may authors and dramatist’s spooky tales and has been adapted for radio and TV over the years including by Andrew Davies as the BBC's Ghost Story for Christmas in 1976 with Denholm Elliott, and BBC Radio 4’s version on Christmas Day 2022 starring Samuel West and James Purefoy.

Told from a first-person perspective, the railway signalman of the title tells of an apparition that has been haunting the narrator. Its spectral appearances foretell tragic events on the railway on which he works. As in a Christmas Carol there are three phantom warnings of danger, will these prophecies come true?
