Our Big Project Exhibition picture

September sees the launch of ‘Our Big Project’ and the Richard Rochester exhibition at the Exeter Community Centre will be at the heart of it.

We are delighted to be showing a range of work by the Exeter based artist, which will include selected photographs taken during the refurbishment of the top floor of our historic centre, as part of the project.

Richard Rochester grew up in Lympstone and after school initially trained as a jeweller and went on to take a degree in Fine Art at Exeter College of Art and Design, graduating in 1991. He then entered the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, and began a military career that lasted 18 years, initially in the Army infantry and later in the Royal Marines. During this time he served operationally in Bosnia Herzegovina, Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan.

Richard left the military in 2012 and briefly ran a veterans' charity project before focussing his full attention on art. He now lives and works in Exeter. The centre piece of the exhibition will be “Wood in France” - a 6 metre long drawing of Mametz Wood on the River Somme and site of a fierce battle in WW1. The artwork was produced with charcoal made from wood taken from the battlefield and the exhibition will tell the story behind the artwork with additional images and text. The piece will be on display throughout the annual period of remembrance.
