Great Victorian Architects and Exeter Cathedral

Gallery 20

Two of the great architects of 19th century England worked at Exeter Cathedral. In the second in the series of talks on 'What the Victorians did for Exeter, John Allan, Cathedral archaeologist, will show that the works of George Gilbert Scott and John Loughborough Pearson display great sensitivity to the medieval building and deserve to be widely admired. Gilbert Scott undertook the restoration of 1870-7. Pearson was responsible for the reconstructed library and cloister. Both projects are on national significance. Gilbert Scott's work entailed a major controversy with the Cathedral Chapter, leading to an extraordinary and very expensive legal dispute, resolved only when it reached the House of Lords.
