Lammas Fayre Procession

Historic Procession to Cathedral Green from the Civic Centre in Paris Street to the impressive Guildhall in the High Street.

This historic tradition dates back over 900 years and was originally to proclaim the beginning of the harvest when a fair would be held at various points around the City. The Lammas Fayre White Glove was displayed during the fair and was a sign of Royal protection of the peace. The large leather, stuffed glove was attached to a long pole and was decorated with ribbons and a garland of flowers.

These days, the tradition links with the opening of the Exeter Craft Fair which will run this weekend on the Cathedral Green.

The Lord Mayor will lead the procession of civic heads from across the County, together with local people from across the City, from Southernhay to the Guildhall where the historic proclamation that dates back to 1330 and Edward III is read out to the assembled crowd.

The procession sets off at 11am down the High Street and ends in Cathedral Yard where the Annual Craft Fayre will then open for the weekend.

The City of Exeter is proud to maintain this colourful and ancient tradition.
