About

Virginia Baily and Kate Furnivall will be talking about the background to their latest novels, The Fourth Shore and The Guardian of Lies, and discussing the role of fiction in bringing forgotten stories to life.
Virginia's The Fourth Shore is set mainly in Italian North Africa aka Libya - when it was a seemingly glamorous Italian outpost - and reveals some of the glory and the brutality of the fascist colonial expansion. In her illustrated talk Virginia will be exploring the theme of hidden histories, repressed memories and forgotten wars. Her talk will consider the role of fiction in bringing forgotten stories to life and exploring their legacy.
Kate is also passionate about the crucial role played by historical writers in unearthing pivotal moments from the past and bringing them to life in order that a modern generation can learn from them and gain a clearer perspective. Her latest novel, The Guardian of Lies, is set in 1953 in the Camargue, France, and explores the impact of the Cold War on everyday lives in a tense and revealing thriller that is acutely relevant in the context of the present global friction. Together Virginia Baily and Kate Furnivall will undoubtedly enjoy a lively discussion of these themes, followed by audience questions.
