About

Born into one of the most tumultuous eras of English history, at the age of twelve Margaret Beaufort found herself married for a second time and – despite her tender years – pregnant with her first child. As she approached her confinement, her husband Edmund Tudor died of plague. Heavily pregnant and facing an uncertain future, Margaret fled to Pembroke Castle where her brother-in-law, Jasper Tudor, took her in. It was here that, at the age of thirteen, she was forced to undergo a traumatic labour. On 28 January 1457, Margaret gave birth to a baby boy – Henry. It was in him that she invested all of her hopes and ambitions for the future, but it was to be by no means a stable course. As the Wars of the Roses raged, so too did Margaret's fortunes and those of her son come under threat – at the age of fourteen Henry Tudor was forced to flee into exile abroad. It would be more than a decade before Margaret saw him again. On 22 August 1485, the Battle of Bosworth resulted in the culmination of all of her hopes. Her son was crowned Henry VII, and Margaret became the most powerful woman in England: an uncrowned queen.
