1 day Papermaking Workshop: Papermaking and Forming Techniques Using Found Materials and Recycled Pulp.

In this workshop we will spend the day working with found plant material and recycled pulp to make sheets of handmade paper and to mould around natural and manmade items to make vessels. There will be the opportunity to incorporate additional materials such as threads, pressed petals, leaves and seeds to personalise your vessel. All materials are provided.

Papermaking can get messy so wear something suitable or bring along an apron.

Tutor Janine Ziolkowski

I am excited to share my passion of paper making. I got hooked on this craft many moons ago and in the days when my job as a primary school teacher was my bread and butter it was something I had to squeeze in around work, being a mother and wife! I first attended a paper making course at The Glasgow School of Art during a school holiday and with the benefit of quite sophisticated equipment produced a wad of papers from recycled paper and plants. I then found a self-taught paper maker in Herefordshire, Maureen Richardson and spent a wonderful week camping in a field and cycling back and forth to her house. I made paper from absolutely everything that grew in her garden or in hedgerows as I collected on my rides to and fro!!! Now retired from the classroom and moved to Dorset I have returned to paper making and have explored making seaweed paper from local beaches. I have found an abundance of plant materials which make excellent paper on country walks and have made paper from nettles, bamboo leaves, hart's tongue fern, broad buckler fern, pendulous sedge, hard rush, hogweed, alexander’s and onion skin sometimes mixing plant pulps with cotton pulp. I use natural dyes to colour my paper and my favourites are red onion skin and avocado pips and skins. Recently I have been working with pigments mixing ground charcoal and rust from old nails into my pulp. I embed pressed flowers, silk threads, wools and other natural fibres into my paper. I celebrate nature and to make something beautiful with little environmental impact is important to me. I am constantly researching the history of paper making and learning all the time. As a teacher at heart, I hope to introduce others to explore and share what I have learnt.
