In the autumn of 1921 Lord Poltimore, like many landowners in the years after the First World War, put Poltimore House and his properties in the village up for sale. The details of the sale and the individual lots are available but now we have detailed information about who lived in every house in the village. We hope to be able to trace some of the descendants of Poltimore families from the 1920s but we can also show how things had changed since the previous census in 1911. More people worked away from the village and fewer people on the farms. More children stayed on for longer at school. The big house was shut up and only the housekeeper and a maid were resident. There was still a team of gardeners, but the boilers in the glasshouses were taken out of use and the gardens turned over to growing for sale rather than for enjoyment. Our new exhibition captures the transition between the old world and the new.

Poltimore House is just off the B3181 north of Exeter, signposted Pinhoe and Broadclyst. Junction 29 is the nearest exit from the M5.
Public Transport Catch the 1, 1A or 1B Stagecoach Bus and disembark at the Poltimore Village stop on the B3181 by the M5 bridge. A ten minute walk towards Poltimore Village will bring you to the driveway of of Poltimore House (sign).
