Quay Words presents Anthony Joseph Sonnets for Albert

We’re pleased to welcome Anthony Joseph back to Quay Words after his fantastic outdoor set in 2021. Anthony will be reading from his new poetry collection _Sonnets for Albert._

With _Sonnets for Albert_, Anthony Joseph returns to the autobiographical material explored in his earlier collection_ Bird Head Son_. In this follow-up, he weighs the impact of being the son of an absent, or mostly absent, father, Though these poems threaten to break under the weight of their emotions, they are always masterfully poised as the stylish man they depict.

Anthony Joseph is an award winning Trinidad-born poet, novelist, academic and musician. He is the author of five poetry collections and three novels. His 2018 novel _Kitch: A Fictional Biography of a Calypso Icon _was shortlisted for the Republic of Consciousness Prize, the Royal Society of Literature’s Encore Award, and long listed for the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature. His most recent publication is the experimental novel _The Frequency of Magic_. In 2019, he was awarded a Jerwood Compton Poetry Fellowship. In 2020 a Polish translation of his afrofuturist novel _The African Origins of UFOs_ was published, followed by a Spanish edition of _Kitch_. As a musician, he has released eight critically acclaimed albums, and in 2020 received a Paul Hamlyn Foundation Composers Award. HIs most recent album, _The Rich Are Only Defeated When Running For Their Lives_ was released in May 2021. He lectures in Creative Writing at Kings College, London.
