Join craftsman Alex Finberg for a day carving spoons from Dartmoor trees. We will be carving wind fallen and sustainable wood grown on Dartmoor with knives and hook tools, to create beautiful functional wooden spoons. We will delve into RAMM’s collections to find inspiration in historic spoons from diverse cultures. By recreating ancient spoons, we aim to build a connection through time to the people who once used them, reflecting on the traditions and customs that shaped their culinary culture. Suitable for young people aged 12 – 18. Accompanying parent/carer (to observe or support) optional. Please note accompanying parents/carers attend free. Parents/carers of unaccompanied young people will be required to fill in a contact details form on arrival. About Alex Finberg: Alex is an award winning craftsman and author based in South Devon. He uses age old carving techniques to carve wood into beautiful, functional woodenware from wind fallen and sustainably cut local trees. He is an advocate for the wellbeing benefits of woodcraft and the new wood culture movement; rediscovering our relationship to the origins of everyday things, the trees they grew from and the people who made them. Alex’s hand carved items can be bought from his Woodcraft Shop (Alex Finberg) and local stockists Craft Mongers & Make Southwest. His forthcoming book ‘Spooncarving: From Log to Spoon’ was published by the Crowood Press in Autumn 2024 and is available online and in independent book shops in the UK and internationally. He runs a range of workshops on Spooncarving & Woodcraft and has taught at various organisations and festivals around the UK including Dartington Trust, Schumacher College, the National Trust and at Spoonfest, the International Festival of the Carved Wooden Spoon.
