Veitch Lamppost Trail

A guided tour following a trail which celebrates the Veitch family’s horticultural dynasty, their connection with Exeter and the city’s proud history of engineering, led by Gina Richards. Pre-booking required.

See 17 restored and painted cast iron lamp posts around the St David’s and St James’ neighbourhoods, where the Veitch nurseries, orchard and family home were. The trail of lamp posts starts in Elm Grove, where Robert and later Peter, Veitch lived. It ends in St David’s Churchyard where Peter Veitch is buried.

The Garton and King garlanded lamp post in Bystock Terrace is a civic lamp post with ivy in relief and the city coat of arms on the base. It has been pained by sign writer Mark Hill. The other lamp posts in the trail have been painted by Botanical illustrator, Kate Wilson with significant Veitch plants.
