Walkshop With Writer-In-Residence Sarah Acton

Exeter Custom House, 46 The Quay, Exeter, EX2 4AN
Many open books laid out together

Join Sarah [https://quaywords.org.uk/residencies/sarah-acton-summer-2024/] at dusk for a creative writing and walking workshop. We will explore the theme of bodies of water and the vessel of the body as part of individual and communal writing practice. We will get curious about the physicality of composition with our walking movement outdoors then see how this feeds into our writing practice together with discussion about the river’s memory and our bodies as vessels holding memory. Participants will meet Sarah at the quayside, enjoy a gentle walk while hearing stories of the quayside heritage, and generating ideas and fragments of new writing inspired by playful prompts and pacing out, then returning to Custom House to develop writing notes, or be guided by Sarah to make creative writing visual posters with a hot drink.

Walks are short and gentle circular distances with invitation to find a moment alone to tune in. There will be benches to rest and a pace to suit the group. The ground is stable and suitable for all levels of mobility and the walkshops is suitable for adults with an interest in exploring research practice and developing new raw material/ideas in discussion to work up afterwards.

We will meet outside the Custom House for a 45 minute walk and then return to the classroom indoors for follow up writing and making. Clipboards and materials provided. All levels and abilities welcome but most suited to adult writers and artists interested in exploring research practice. You are welcome to attend just one walkshop – or both!

The walk will take place along the Quayside near to the Custom House and will be on wheelchair accessible terrain. Bring suitable clothes and footwear for the outdoor portion of the event, which will go ahead whatever the weather.
The workshop will take place in historic rooms on the first floor of the building. There is step-free entry to the ground floor and a lift connects the ground and first floors. If you have particular access requirements please phone or email the Custom House Visitor Centre in advance of your visit.
There are five free disabled parking spaces for registered Blue Badge holders next to the Exeter Antiques Centre immediately in front of the Custom House. Maximum stay is three hours.
Please email Quay Words on quaywords@literatureworks.org.uk with any accessibility enquiries.
We can accommodate free tickets for carers or personal assistants if needed – just email us after booking to let us know.
