Exeter is a great location for filming with the Cathedral, historical buildings and the university campus being particular draws. It is also close to stunningly beautiful coastlines and countryside.
Over ten years ago, German film company FFP Media started filming television dramas based on Rosamunde Pilcher books. Each year they film more films so that now over 100 television programmes have now been made. Shown on the ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen) channel in Germany and Austria, regular audiences are in the region of 9 million.
These programmes have all been filmed in the SW of England and film crew bases have included Exeter, Plymouth, Poole and Cornwall. Locations that have been featured in the films have been historical buildings, local coastlines, Dartmoor’s rugged scenery and much more. On occasions, local landmarks have ‘doubled up’ for well known British locations elsewhere so that, for example, Northernhay Gardens and Southernhay became Hyde Park and Harley Street for a day.
Exeter is now enjoying the secondary tourism benefits from this filming. We see a lot of German and Austrian tourists in Exeter and the Heart of Devon. These holidaymakers want to see the places that they have seen on screen. With its thriving airport and proximity to cross channel ferry links, Exeter is a good entry point for German and Austrian tour companies who have put together Rosamunde Pilcher tours.
