The City Gate is a characterful pub with 20 boutique bedrooms, perfectly placed in the heart of Exeter and just a short walk from the city centre, Exeter Cathedral and the historic Quayside.
Whether you’re visiting for a weekend away, stopping by for lunch or looking for somewhere to celebrate, you’ll find everything you need under one roof. The pub serves seasonal British food throughout the day, from much-loved pub classics and lighter dishes to traditional Sunday roasts, alongside a well-stocked bar of beers, wines, cocktails, spritzes and alcohol-free options. Breakfast is also served daily.
Tucked away behind the pub is our hidden courtyard garden, complete with a covered stretch tent – a little oasis in the city centre and the perfect spot for lunch, after-work drinks or a relaxed evening with friends.
Upstairs, our 20 individually designed boutique bedrooms offer a comfortable base for exploring Exeter and the wider Devon area, with thoughtful touches including air conditioning and minibars.

With Exeter’s shops and attractions on the doorstep, the Quayside within walking distance and the Devon coast just a short train ride away, The City Gate is perfectly placed for eating, drinking, celebrating and staying in the heart of Exeter.

The City Gate is conveniently located in central Exeter on Iron Bridge, just a short distance from the city centre. From the M5, leave at Junction 30 and follow signs for Exeter city centre. Continue towards the city centre and follow signs for North Street/Iron Bridge. The pub is located on Iron Bridge, within easy walking distance of Exeter High Street and the Cathedral. There are several public car parks nearby for guests travelling by car.
The City Gate is easy to reach by public transport. Exeter Central railway station is around a 5-minute walk away, with regular services connecting Exeter with destinations across Devon and beyond. Exeter St David’s railway station is approximately a 15–20 minute walk or a short taxi ride away. The pub is also within easy walking distance of Exeter’s main city centre bus stops, making it a convenient spot for both local visitors and those travelling from further afield.
