Exeter Canal

About

Coarse fishing is available on the Exeter Canal between the Basin and Double Locks.

A Rod Licence from the Environment Agency rod licence is required for free fishing between these sections on the Canal and must be shown when asked by a Council Officer or an authorised fishing bailiff.

The rest of the Canal can be fished with an Exeter & District Angling Association permit, which is available from the Angling Centre, Smythen Street, Exeter.

The City Council has twelve salmon fishing beats on the River Exe (information available at Civic Centre) consisting of approximately 6,581 metres (7,200 yards) which can be fished with a season permit, in conjunction with an Environment Agency rod licence.

There is also a section of the river which can be fished with a Day Permit, again in conjunction with an Environment Agency rod licence.

The season lasts from 14 February to 30 September inclusive.

Further information can be obtained from the Waterways Office, Civic Centre : Email river.canal@exeter.gov.uk or Tel 01392 265791 ( Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri 9.30 am to 2pm )

As an angler it is most important for you to know that anyone aged 12 years or over who fishes for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England and Wales must have an Environment Agency Rod Fishing Licence.

A rod licence is a statutory requirement (in other words it is required by law) and entitles the licensee to use a rod and line to fish. Rod licences are issued by the Environment Agency. They differ from permits (often referred to as tickets or day tickets) which give permission to fish a particular water or waters and are issued by fishery owners, angling clubs and so on.

Rod licences can be purchased from any Post Office in England and Wales, online or by phone 0344 800 5386
