Carmen

About

Carmen is fierce, beautiful and independent. She lives by her wits in a hard world. Arresting and seductive yet strangely elusive, she waits for a man to inspire her love and cruelly discards those who do not. Carmen warns men who attempt to ensnare her heart that they should guard their own. She drives men to recklessness and leaves trouble in her wake. Will Carmen choose a good soldier who clings to the memory of his childhood sweetheart and his mother at home or the brave, glamorous, bull-fighting Toreador?

Join the young professional opera singers of Devon Opera for Bizet's Carmen. With a new setting of the score for chamber orchestra from the internationally renowned composer Pavel Timofeyevsky the acclaimed opera director Anna Gregory's intimate, intense newly staged production promises to thrill.

Carmen is hailed as the BBC Magazine's top choice for first time opera goers and beloved by regular opera lovers this show will unleash passion with no holds barred.

After the huge success of La Bohème last year at the Barnfield theatre, Devon Opera returns to perform at The Northcott in 2026 with Bizet's setting of Mérimée's novella depicting the life of the infamous Carmen.

Sung in French with English Surtitles.
