Rossinis LItaliana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers) is one of operas most joyful and entertaining comedies. Packed with sparkling melodies, brilliant ensembles and hilarious misunderstandings, it tells the story of the clever Isabella, who arrives in Algiers and outwits everyone around her in her quest to reunite with her beloved Lindoro.
Its enduring popularity lies in Rossinis irresistible music, comic genius and unforgettable characters. Audiences love the operas fast-paced humour, lively energy and dazzling finales.
The work is also a true bel canto masterpiece, demanding extraordinary vocal agility, elegance and stamina. The role of Isabella is a showcase for a bel canto mezzo-soprano, while the tenor and bass roles require virtuoso singing as well as excellent comic timing.
Exeter Opera Group is proud to present this delightful opera with outstanding soloists, including a superb bel canto mezzo-soprano, exceptional tenors and basses, and a wonderful ensemble of sopranos and altos. Together, they bring Rossinis vibrant score to life in an evening filled with laughter, musical brilliance and sheer operatic joy.
