While it can be tempting to stay indoors at this time of year, winter is a fantastic time to get outside and explore the beautiful countryside within easy reach of Exeter. There are no summer crowds, just stunning landscapes and memories waiting to be made.
The team at Haldon Forest Park share their top tips for getting outdoors in 2026.
Beat the January blues
The festive season is suddenly over and the start of a new year can be a time of cold weather and long, dark nights. Treat your mind and body to natural light and fresh air by spending some time in nature. Some bracing exercise can increase your energy levels and reduce stress. Even a gentle walk can clear your mind and lift your mood.

Restore your balance
Recover from the holiday rush and see the forest from a totally different perspective with an indulgent sauna. Let your muscles relax as you unwind surrounded by nature with views to Dartmoor.
Bring the family together
There is something for all interests in the great outdoors, from easy-to-follow walks and family-friendly play areas, to adrenaline-pumped bike rides and high ropes. And everyone can join the adventure with an all-terrain mobility scooter or adaptive bike. Wrap up warm and make your trip a full day out!
Treat your four-legged friend
There are no seasonal restrictions in the forest, where dogs are welcome all year round! Haldon Forest Park is the perfect spot to roam, and investigate scents and sounds. Just follow our simple dog code for happy times and waggy tails.
Build your fitness
If you’re working on your fitness, why not try our progressive running routes. Start from 1km and work your way up to 5km – or join our two 5k routes together for a challenging 10k trail! You’ll never want to run on a treadmill again once you’ve tasted the trails.
