Inspired by the work of William Shakespeare, cultural producers Lightbear Lane are launching a bold, new Shakespeare Festival in Exeter, from 24th to 26th April 2026.

Combining professional artistic work with community access, the festival will be offering a programme of theatre, music, talks, exhibitions and family-friendly events across partner venues in Exeter, a UNESCO City of Literature.

Take place in cultural and historical venues across the city, highlights include a performance of The Merchant of Venice at St Nicholas Priory, Illustrating Shakespeare at the Devon and Exeter Institution, and the opportunity to discover Shakespeare’s folio and works of his contemporaries in the Exeter Cathedral archives. The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum will also present a complementary special display examining Shakespeare’s legacy in film.

Alongside ticketed performances, the festival includes free and low-cost activities and events designed to widen participation, particularly for young people and local communities. Educational strands include a Young Poets initiative and opportunities for audiences to engage with Shakespeare through discussion and heritage collections across the city.

You can view the full programme of events and buy tickets here.
