Celebrating local stories for English Tourism Week, Exeter UNESCO City of Literature’s Anna, Jen, and Jordan share some of their favourite reading spots in the city.
As one of only 63 UNESCO Cities of Literature in the world, it’s no surprise that Exeter is spoilt for choice when it comes to perfect places to read! Recently picked up a paperback from our unique Penguin Books Vending Machine at Exeter St Davids Train Station or paid a visit to Exeter’s fantastic independent bookshop Bookbag in McCoy’s Arcade? You’re in luck, as we’ve handpicked some of our favourite places to spend an hour or two with a brand new book in hand.
Alma
Wonderful coffee, cosy vibes, and a highly contested upstairs seat to watch the passersby. Alma is a favourite amongst the Exeter City of Literature team as it warmly welcomes readers, writers, and storymakers on a daily basis.
Cricklepit Mill
We venture down to the award winning wildlife garden which is looked after by the Devon Wildlife Trust and a team of volunteers whenever we fancy a moment of respite surrounded by greenery.
We recently paid a visit with our Literary Map of Exeter & Devon as Cricklepit Mill is one of the reading spots featured within! Inside you can also discover Devon’s wonderful independent bookshops, literary landmarks, and the county’s celebrated writers of past and present.
Boatyard Bakery
Quaint quayside seating and fantastic pastries, in the summer Boatyard Bakery is a wonderful reading spot worthy of the Mediterranean vibes that are conjured up from its view of Piazza Terracina on Exeter Quay.
Topsham Brewery / 12 Bar Music & Social
Just across from Boatyard Bakery you can find Topsham Brewery. On the first Wednesday and third Monday of every month, the Exeter City of Literature team takes over the upstairs area for Silent Book Club - a bring-your-own-book book club that invites the readers of Exeter to spend an hour in communal silence reading whatever takes their fancy. These sessions are completely free to attend and no booking is required, which makes for a perfect low stakes evening of culture and community in the city!
If you’d like to experience this book club with a difference in the city centre, the Exeter City of Literature team also hosts Silent Book Club on the last Thursday of every month at 12 Bar Music & Social.
