A new way to explore the South West has arrived - and Exeter is right at its heart.

UNESCO UK has partnered with Great Western Railway to launch Explore UNESCO South West Trailsan inspiring new platform designed to help visitors discover our region’s world-class heritage in a more sustainable way.

Bringing together eight UNESCO-designated sites, the initiative offers a series of carefully curated two-day itineraries, connecting dramatic coastlines, historic cities, and globally significant landscapes. With easy-to-follow routes, practical travel tips, and a focus on low-carbon journeys by rail, it’s never been simpler to explore responsibly while experiencing the very best of the South West.

At the heart of this story is Exeter - proudly recognised as a UNESCO City of Literature, and the only one in the South of England. One of just 63 worldwide, Exeter’s rich literary heritage and vibrant cultural scene make it a must-visit destination on the trail.

Over two days, visitors can immerse themselves in Exeter’s love of storytelling—past and present. Wander historic streets steeped in history, explore independent bookshops, discover cultural venues, and venture beyond the city to the surrounding Devon landscapes that have inspired generations of writers. It’s a journey that blends heritage, creativity, and a deep connection to place.

The launch comes at a time when travellers are increasingly seeking meaningful, experience-led escapes. By linking heritage, nature, and culture through themed trails, Explore UNESCO South West Trails positions the region as a leading destination for sustainable tourism.

Look out for campaign posters at key railway stations encouraging you to “start your journey by rail,” and even take part in the launch competition for a chance to win a trail-inspired getaway.
