Discover the Exeter Book

Visit Exeter Cathedral and explore its fascinating library and literary heritage. The Cathedral is home to the Exeter Book, the largest surviving anthology of Anglo-Saxon poetry and a UNESCO artefact of global cultural significance.

Pick up a book and settle into one of Exeter’s picturesque reading spots. From the Quayside and Cricklepit Mill to leafy parks and cosy cafés, there are plenty of places to escape into a good story. Penguin book vending machine

There’s a little piece of literary history waiting for you at Exeter St Davids train station.

In 1934, Sir Allen Lane famously came up with the idea for Penguin Books while waiting for a train at the station – helping to transform the way people discovered and bought books. Today, that legacy lives on with the Penguin Books Vending Machine. Perfect for book lovers, commuters and curious travellers, the colourful machine offers a selection of Penguin titles to browse and buy before you board.

While embarking on your journey from Exeter St Davids, be sure to take a look at the colourful literary artwork located on the footbridge, which honours Devon’s rich literary history.

Find a quiet spot and read

The simplest, and often most enjoyable, way to experience the heart and soul of Exeter as a City of Literature is to sit down with a good book.

Find a peaceful corner beside the River Exe, settle into one of Exeter’s cafés or head to one of the city’s beautiful green spaces. Pick up a book from a local shop, find a comfortable spot and give yourself some time to read.

After all, you don’t have to be a writer or literary expert to enjoy Exeter’s literary spirit. You just need a good story.
