"Can you handle the terror? Two classic ghost stories showing as a special discounted double-bill event.
The Woman in Black (15)
Dir. Herbert Wise | 1989 | UK | Adrian Rawlins, Pauline Moran
When a friendless old widow dies in the market town of Crythin Gifford, a young solicitor is sent in to settle her estate. Following cryptic warnings from the locals regarding the terrifying history of the old woman’s house, he very soon begins to see visions of a menacing woman in black... Atmospherically directed by BAFTA-nominated Herbert Wise and starring Adrian Rawlins as the unfortunate young solicitor this unsettling drama remains a high-water mark for ghost story adaptations on British television and still retains its significant potential to shock.
Deftly directed by Herbert Wise, based upon a script by genre legend Nigel Neale, this adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel remains the definitive adaptation and positively drips with menace. Pauline Moran, perhaps best known as Miss Lemon in Agatha Christie's Poirot, proves utterly mesmerising as the grimacing malevolent ghost and is a special guest of the festival on Sunday 28th.
The Haunting (12)
Dir. Robert Wise | 1963 | US, UK | Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson
Hill House had stood for 90 years and might stand for 90 more. Silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone…
Robert Wise, returned to psychological horror for this much admired, first screen adaptation of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. Four people (Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson and Russ Tamblyn) come to the house to study its supernatural phenomena. Or has the house drawn at least one of them to it? The answer will unnerve you in this elegantly sinister classic movie.
There will be a 10 minute interval between films"
