Meet outside the Cathedral Cafe for a walking tour through two millennia of a literate city, discovering the sites of roman inscriptions, medieval chained libraries, the earliest booksellers in the 16th century, the earliest printing presses in the 17th century, newspapers in the 18th century, private and public libraries in the 19th century, record offices in the 20th century, and the buildings where they are housed today. Learn about some of the writers and artists, printers and booksellers, librarians and archivists who have created, distributed and cared for information of all kinds across the centuries.
The walk is sponsored by Exeter Civic Society and will be led by Ian Maxted on Tuesday 16 September at 10:30am. Numbers are limited to twelve and if there is sufficient demand an afternoon tour will be given at 2:30pm with French and/or German commentary. A leaflet of the tour will be provided to participants.
