About

This is a live drama and film performance about the visit Frederick Douglass, former slave and leading African American abolitionist, made to Exeter in 1846. There will also be an exhibition available to provide some historical context.
The Abolitionists in Exeter were energetic campaigners and had an international reputation, consequently Frederick Douglass visited the city on his tour and spoke to very large audiences. However there were tensions in the movement. Some of the campaigners wanted to be more radical in their protests against slavery (which was continuing in the USA) and had disagreements over other political issues, such as the place of women within the movement.

Our drama sees those tensions came to a head with the arrival of Frederick Douglass in the city in 1846

This event is suitable for people aged over 16
