These fascinating passages were built to house the pipes that brought clean drinking water into Medieval Exeter. In fact, these are the only passages of its kind open to the public in Britain! Guided tours have taken place here since the 1930's.

Begin your one-of-a-kind experience at the heritage centre, packed with interactive exhibits and interpretation. Don't worry if you don't get time to see it all - you'll be able to explore the exhibitions after your tour!

Travel back through time as the Underground Passages tour guide gives you an insight as to what it was like working in these passages, with captivating facts and must-see spots. 

Take a moment to stop and listen to the hustle and bustle of Exeter above you - you could be anywhere from underneath Paris Street to walking underneath Exeter's High Street!

When are the Underground Passages open?

Exeter's Underground Passages are open Thursday-Sunday, 11am to 4pm, the last tour starts at 3pm. Please note, the passages are closed on 25th and 26th December.

Throughout the year, Exeter's Underground Passages hosts a number of special events at Easter, Christmas, Halloween and more! Keep an eye on the attraction's Facebook page and www.visitexeter.com for the latest information.

  • Adults: £7.50
  • Concessions (students and over 60's): £6.00
  • Child: £5.00
  • Family (up to 2 adults and up to 3 children): £22

Accessibility

  • First tour generally starts half an hour after opening. They continue at regular intervals throughout the day.
  • Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your tour is due to start.
  • Under 5s are not permitted on tours of Exeter’s Underground Passages. Free access to the exhibition is permitted with an accompanying adult.
  • Wheelchair and pushchair access is restricted to the exhibition only.
  • Visitors should be aware that the Passages are constricted and low in places. They are not suitable for those who suffer from claustrophobia.
  • Sensible footwear is recommended.
  • We are unable to take tours containing only one person.
