With stunning scenery and breathtaking views right just waiting to be admired, often all to yourself, here's a selection of our favourite autumnal strolls.
Haldon Forest Park
When autumn arrives, Haldon Forest Park is transformed into a spectacular tapestry of russet, amber and gold. With 3,500 acres of forest to explore, it’s the perfect place to slow down, breathe in the crisp autumn air and reconnect with nature. Miles of walking trails wind beneath the changing canopy, with beautiful views stretching across Dartmoor and the surrounding countryside. Whether you’re looking for a gentle woodland stroll or a more challenging hike, there’s a route to suit every mood – and plenty of perfectly positioned picnic spots for a well-earned pause along the way.
Exeter Green Circle
It may be called the Exeter Green Circle, but come autumn this 12-mile route around Exeter is anything but green. As the leaves begin to turn, the trail takes on a whole new character, weaving through colourful countryside valley parks, leafy suburbs and peaceful green spaces within the city. The route is split into five sections, making it easy to explore the Green Circle at your own pace without committing to the full loop. Pick a section, wrap up warm and enjoy seeing Exeter from a different perspective as the seasons change.
Topsham
For an autumn walk with a waterside twist, head to Topsham. With its strong maritime character and beautiful position on the Exe estuary, it’s a wonderful place to enjoy crisp autumn days and big open skies. Bring your binoculars and look out for visiting birds as you stroll alongside the water, or time your walk for sunset when the changing colours of the sky are reflected across the estuary – a truly magical sight. Around the town itself, a choice of walking trails offers the chance to discover Topsham’s fascinating history, hidden stories and maritime heritage along the way.
National Trust Killerton House
Autumn feels right at home around the National Trust's Killerton House and Gardens, where over 6,000 acres of gardens, parkland, woodland, farmland and orchards provide endless opportunities to explore. Watch the landscape burst into autumn colour as you wander through glorious gardens, admire champion trees and follow winding woodland paths. With far-reaching views towards Dartmoor, there are plenty of places to pause and take it all in. Feeling adventurous?
