The Bookery is delighted to welcome writer and megalith enthusiast Fiona Robertson for an evening of conversation to celebrate the paperback launch of her acclaimed memoir Stone Lands.
Fiona will be joined in conversation by writer, playwright and folkloristTracey Norman for an evocative discussion exploring Britains ancient stones, landscape, memory and the enduring power of place. Taking place just before the summer solstice, this timely event offers a fitting moment to reflect on the deep histories and seasonal rhythms that run through Stone Lands, a book rooted in the magic, mystery and solace of megalithic landscapes.
Described as superb by The Telegraph and praised for its sense of peace and magic, Stone Lands is an enchanting and beautifully illustrated journey across Britain, from the standing stones of West Penwith and Avebury to the Lake District and Orkney. A few months after discovering that her beloved husband, Stephen, had incurable cancer, Fiona Robertson began to write this book. A longtime megalith enthusiast, she found the ancient stones resonated with her more profoundly than ever as she faced the prospect of losing him. Set upright thousands of years ago, these megaliths are symbols of endurance and survival, standing in contrast to our ephemeral human lives. Infused with folklore, legend and mystery, they enchant the landscape and bring magic to our modern world. Woven delicately around great grief, Stone Lands is ultimately about embracing life, joy and ancient wonder a luminous reminder of what it means to exist on this earth.
Fiona Robertson is a writer, editor and committed megalith enthusiast with a passion for archaeology, history and folklore. A former publishing professional, she has commissioned and edited a number of well-regarded titles exploring ancient landscapes, including The Old Stones, winner of Current Archaeologys Book of the Year award. Stone Lands is her debut memoir and is illustrated with beautiful black-and-white line drawings by Philip Harris.
Tracey Norman is a writer, playwright and narrator whose acclaimed stage play WITCH has been performed over 80 times and is studied on university courses. She writes widely on folklore and historical themes and is co-author of Dark Folklore and Devons Forgotten Witches . Her first full-length novel, Who Is Anna Stenberg? , further explores the haunting intersections of history, myth and story, making her an ideal guide for this solstice-season conversation.
This special evening forms part of Independent Bookshop Week, celebrating the role of independent bookshops as places of discovery, conversation and community. It also sits within The Bookerys programme celebrating theNational Year of Reading, bringing exceptional writers to our community and championing the power of stories to inspire, challenge and connect.
The evening will include an audience Q&A and book signing. This event commences at 6.30pm on June 18th.
