Roadkill: Unveiling the True Cost of Our Toxic Relationship with Cars

Professor Henrietta Moore and Arthur Kay join us to discuss their groundbreaking bookRoadkill: Unveiling the True Cost of Our Toxic Relationship with Cars, winner of the Non-Fiction Book of the Year at the Gilded Acorn Book Awards. This provocative and timely work explores the hidden costsfinancial, social, ethical, and environmentalof our car-dominated culture and offers a compelling vision for a healthier, freer, and more sustainable urban future.
InRoadkill, Moore and Kay dismantle the myth of the car as a symbol of freedom, revealing how it has instead hemmed in our cities, eroded public space, and restricted our choices. Drawing on real-world examples, philosophical insights, and practical policy recommendations, they challenge us to rethink our relationship with cars and imagine a world where mobility enhances, rather than limits, our lives.
The authors argue that breaking up with cars is not just possible, but essential, and offer a roadmap for individuals, communities, and governments to reclaim their streets and their futures.
Professor Dame Henrietta L. Moore is the Founder and Director of the UCL Institute for Global Prosperity and Chair in Culture Philosophy and Design at University College London. A leading global thinker, she challenges traditional economic models and advocates for inclusive, sustainable prosperity. Her work spans environmental decarbonisation, Universal Basic Services, and the future of cities.
Arthur Kay is an entrepreneur, urban designer, and advisor focused on building sustainable cities. He is the founder of Bio-bean, Skyroom, and The Key Worker Homes Fund, and serves on the boards of Transport for London and the Museum of the Home. He lectures internationally on design, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.
