On arrival in Topsham, you’ll find plenty of convenient places to park your bike while you explore. Cycle racks are located near Matthews Hall, at St Margaret’s Church in the heart of the shopping area, and down at The Quay – an ideal spot to pause for refreshments while enjoying beautiful views across the Exe Estuary.

For a well-earned break, make a stop at the cycle-friendly Route 2 Café. Just follow the bright signs at the junction of Strand and The Quay. Only a few pedal strokes away, you’ll also find the award-winning Route 2 Bike Shop, offering cycle hire and expert help from their on-site Bike Doctor.

Cyclists are well catered for in Topsham, with plenty of cafés offering takeaway options for a relaxed refuel. You’ll find great spots along The Quay, on the waterfront at Underway, and near the Recreation Ground, where benches provide the perfect place to pause, often within sight of bike racks for added peace of mind.

Beyond its cycle-friendly stops, Topsham is known for its independent shops, excellent food and drink, and charming architecture – all well worth exploring once you’ve parked up. Many riders following National Cycle Network Route 2 already know it as a favourite place to rest and recharge.

When you’re ready to continue, the route along the estuary is a real highlight. Pedal through the pretty villages of Exton and Lympstone, past Lympstone Commando, and on to Exmouth, where a beautiful beach and promenade await. The journey is mostly traffic-free, using safe, dedicated cycle paths that make it ideal for riders of all abilities. For a spot of aqua-bike action, you can even take the bike-friendly ferry across the water to Starcross where you can access even more cycling routes.

Topsham also proudly plays host to the start of the much-loved Nello Bike Ride, returning on Sunday 28 June 2026. This popular event offers both a challenging 100-mile route over Exmoor and a shorter 55-mile option, attracting riders from across the UK and raising funds for Exeter’s FORCE Cancer Charity. Its long-standing connection with the event is a testament to just how welcoming and cycle-friendly the town truly is.
