Topsham is the perfect destination for a relaxed family day out, combining fresh air, nature and plenty to see and do for all ages.

Just a short train or bus ride from Exeter, this charming estuary town feels like a true escape into the outdoors, with waterside walks, wide green views across East Devon and a safe, welcoming atmosphere that makes it ideal for families.

Start your visit with a wander through the town’s characterful streets. If you arrive on a Saturday, listen out for the town crier sharing local news in traditional style before making your way towards the water and the boatyards below the striking St Margaret’s Church. It’s a great spot for children to watch the swans glide past – and if you’re lucky, you might even spot the famous black swans from nearby Dawlish.

For a different view of Topsham, consider taking the ferry* across the estuary for a unique perspective of the town’s beautiful Dutch-style houses and historic waterfront. If you’d rather stay on dry land, there are plenty of child-friendly places to eat and relax. Pubs such as The Lighter Inn, The Passage House, The Globe and The Lord Nelson offer welcoming spaces for families, with outdoor seating perfect for sunny lunches and early suppers. Alternatively, pick up a picnic from The Boathouse or Sara’s Petite Cuisine – both known for delicious cakes and coffee – and head to The Quay to enjoy the view while admiring the restoration of the impressive wooden barge, Vigilant.

After refuelling, take time to browse Topsham’s wonderful independent shops before heading to the Recreation Ground on Ferry Road. Set close to the water, it’s a great place for children to let off steam, with a zipwire, skate ramp and play equipment for a range of ages. If you’re up for more exploring, continue along the iconic Goat Walk at the end of Strand and follow the path to Bowling Green Marsh Nature Reserve. The bird hide and sweeping estuary views make this a peaceful and rewarding walk, with plenty to spot along the way.

Round off the day back in town with an ice cream or a traditional cream tea, or stay a little longer for dinner as the sun sets over the Exe. Easy to reach and full of simple pleasures, Topsham is the kind of place families return to again and again. Even teenagers will admit it’s a great spot once they’re sitting by the water with something to eat and drink.

Start planning your trip today and visit Love Topsham for more information.
