The weather is brightening up, the evenings are getting longer, and it’s National Walking Month! To help you get outdoors this May, the team at Haldon Forest Park share their top 5 ways to enjoy National Walking Month in the forest.

Enjoy some wildlife spotting

Venture down a wide, level track to indulge in a little nature spotting. Our peaceful wildlife hide is less than 200m from the car park, but you’ll feel like you’re in the wilderness as you tune out daily life and tune into the birdsong. Bring binoculars if you have them, or just bring your favourite snack to sit and enjoy.

Complete our Room on the Broom activity trail

Join Witch and friends on a forest adventure that’s packed with challenges, activities, and play equipment along the way. Simply follow the panels along the trail to help Witch find her lost belongings and complete her spell. To get the most from the trail, an accompanying trail pack can be purchased from the Info Pod for £4 before you set off. Allow around 2 hours to complete the 3km trail with little legs, making time for play breaks and snack stops.

Count how many butterflies you can see

Our longest waymarked walking trail takes you down the forest slopes into our butterfly conservation area, carefully managed to support the pearl-bordered fritillary. You’ll also discover a bubbling stream, then start your uphill return through our famous rhododendron tunnel! This is a 6km walk for hikers with moderate fitness. There are rest points along the way, but there are some steep climbs on the way back to the car park.

Challenge your family with orienteering

Exercise your brain during your walk with one of our orienteering courses! We have maps for every ability from complete beginner to advanced. We’ll even lend you a compass and show you how to use it. Get everyone involved in locating and finding the next marker and celebrate together when you track them all down.

Explore any trail with an off-road mobility scooter

If your mobility is limited or you’re recovering from an injury, join the adventure with one of our off-road mobility scooters. Our scooters are safe and easy to use, and our team will make sure you feel confident before you head onto the trail. Off-road scooters are capable on all our walking trails come rain or shine, ensuring that everyone can join National Walking Month.
