Catherine Hurcombe takes us on a whistle-stop tour of the inaugural First Thursday – a city-centre initiative from InExeter to celebrate all things Gandy Street

People walking through Exeter’s city centre on 4th June could take a welcome respite from the rain and gloom with a visit to Exeter’s First Thursday event.

Following a suggestion from a local resident, First Thursdays is modelled on similar successful schemes in the US. Organised by InExeter, the city’s Business Improvement District, and supported by local creative hub Exeter Phoenix, the scheme is being run on the first Thursday of every month from June to September 2026.

Having been involved in this initiative both as an organiser, in my role at the University of Exeter, and as a resident enjoying the city sights, I have seen for myself how much hard work went into this event – and it definitely paid off! Businesses along Gandy Street were bustling with life as commuters and families alike took stock of the offerings on one of Exeter’s most scenic and beloved streets. Late-night shopping could be found at independent businesses like Wand Vintage and Maker Mart, and visitors could stop for a quick bite from local eateries like Luna Café or Red Panda.

I particularly enjoyed seeing so many creatives getting involved with the celebrations. At Boston Tea Party, there were a host of different craft stalls, showcasing a huge range of talent, and those wandering through the street could make a quick stop off for some face painting, or to hear some live music.

Those looking to take their trip further afield made their way up to Exeter Phoenix to try their hand at printing with Double Elephant Print Workshop, or hear from University of Exeter researchers, Flora Hemming and Dr James Dyke, in a series of insightful pop-up talks. Up at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, the party was in full swing with an outdoor DJ, and even more treats to pick up from their café.

(And of course, who could forget the cocktail offerings, with a speciality drink available at local bars – Crockett’s, Pixy’s, The Mermaid, Coolings, and The Cocktail Club!)

While First Thursdays will be returning to Gandy Street on 2 July for another unmissable evening, there was something particularly special about being part of this first-ever event, and seeing the care and community spirit that brought it all together. I’m very excited that this is how I got to kick off this year’s June Boom, and I look forward to seeing everything else the month has to offer!

The next First Thursday events are 2nd July, 6th August and 3rd September.
