Following the government announcement that England will be going into national lockdown from Tuesday 4th January, we are disappointed to announce that RAMM will be closing to the public once more.
In the meantime, you can still explore RAMM online: https://rammuseum.org.uk/visiting-us/explore-ramm-online/ and follow our social media channels on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to stay up to date with the latest news, including online exhibitions, events and competitions.
You can also still shop with us with the newly launched online Shop at RAMM.
Guidance for when RAMM is able to reopen:
Things may look a bit different, here are some of the changes that have been put in place to help you enjoy your visit and stay safe.
There is now a one-way route around the museum with entry through the Garden Entrance.
There is no need to book in advance, but there is a capacity limit, so at busy times or to guarantee your time slot you will need to book a free timed ticket online before you visit.
The ticket will give you a 30 minute arrival slot, however you can stay as long as you like.
Please do not arrive before or after your 30 minute arrival slot.
If you plan to visit the First Women exhibition please arrive at the beginning of your 30 minute arrival period.
We have increased the frequency of cleaning throughout RAMM, especially toilets, handrails, handles, lift buttons and key touchpoints.
Please help us to keep the lifts reserved for people who have accessibility requirements.
Some dressing-up items and items you can touch have been removed.
The Shop and Cafe are open. We have extended the cafe seating area so you can eat and drink at a safe distance. Crumbs and sticky fingers are not good for our precious objects, so eating and drinking is only permitted in the cafe.
The majority of the museum is open, but for the time being we have reduced numbers in one or two galleries.
If you bring your own mobile device and headphones with you, you will be able to access an increasing amount of digital information by using them during your visit.
Our friendly staff and volunteers will be on hand throughout the museum to answer your questions.
Once you have finished exploring you will exit from the ground floor onto Queen Street.
There are also lots of ways to explore RAMM online from the comfort of home. Play a game, curate your own collection, join Minecraft worlds, research our collection and more.
About us:
There’s more in Exeter’s award-winning museum than you might imagine, its 16 galleries of displays take visitors on a voyage of discovery from pre-history to the present day and from Exeter all around the world.
With three special exhibition spaces, its changing programme means there is likely to be something different to see every visit, from national touring shows to community displays and fine art from the city’s collection.
Free entry gives everyone the freedom to visit many times and to stay for any length of time.
Displays draw from the city’s collection including glassware, Westcountry silver, clocks and watches, local history and archaeology. Exotic animals, birds and butterflies delight children and the World Cultures galleries display stunning items from all over the world.
RAMM is for everyone. Situated between Rougemont and Northernhay gardens and the city’s busy commercial centre, it is easily accessible by bus, rail or car. The splendid Victorian building has full wheelchair access and a key objects tour with BSL, audio and subtitles can be enjoyed by all visitors using the free WiFi. The family-friendly cafe provides delicious light meals, snacks and drinks.
Don’t forget to visit The Shop at RAMM, offering hand-picked gifts and unique craft items alongside books and affordable souvenirs for children. Gifts have been chosen which don’t appear at other places in the city so that The Shop at RAMM can offer an exclusive shopping experience inspired by the museum.
The museum’s busy event programme includes talks and classes for adults and lively, creative activities for children and families.
The RAMM have now developed a simple website optimised for mobile and tablet use to provide tours that visitors can use in the museum with their free wifi service, take tours around Exeter based on the time periods and related objects on our Time Trail website, and find exhibition related objects via a tour and map. Part of this is providing access to disabled visitors, hence the BSL, audio and subtitled key objects tour, but it is also catering for the cultural visitor to Exeter. And providing an online service when the museum is closed on a Monday or bank holiday! To access the site please click on the link in the 'Further Information' section below.
An events booklet contains details of all exhibitions and events. Call the museum on 01392 265858 for your physical copy or visit the website www.exeter.gov.uk/RAMM.
