Join natural history artist James Winrow on this inspirational workshop introducing the techniques and tools he uses to capture the character and delicate beauty of birds. Drawing has been used for thousands of years to record, observe, celebrate and honour the natural world around us. This bird portrait workshop enables you to experience this ancient tradition using modern materials and techniques. Working exclusively with graphite, James will show you how to craft a portrait of a bird in a natural history illustration style. Using freehand and scientific illustration techniques, you will learn basic and advanced methods of applying graphite, and go through the process of creating a detailed illustration from start to finish. You will leave with a beautiful bird portrait and a deeper appreciation and understanding of the depth and richness of the natural world around us – a renewed sense of wonder! All abilities are welcomed. James grew up at the foot of the South Downs in Sussex where he roamed the chalk hills bird watching, drawing, exploring and fishing. After a stint running a design studio he took a much-needed sabbatical, getting his hands in the dirt working on farms around the UK and living in grizzly bear country in northern British Columbia. Returning to the UK he worked for two years leading nature awareness and bushcraft courses for children and adults, immersed in the rich Devon countryside. This ongoing rewilding of heart and mind led him to unearth his passion for drawing the natural world. He now loves to share this magic with others, drawing them deeper into nature. His work is sold in various shops in the UK and USA and is also held in private collections in both countries. He is married with four children and lives in the Teign Valley, surrounded by the beauty and wildlife of Dartmoor National Park.
