In May 2025 RAMM purchased a 1,130 year old Saxon silver penny dating to the reign of King Alfred the Great. It’s only a small coin, about the size of a modern 20p, but it is hugely important to the history of Exeter. Not only is it the first coin to be made in Exeter but, in many ways, it marks the start of modern Exeter. In this online talk, RAMM’s Assistant Curator Tom Cadbury will tease out the stories behind the object – how this coin was made, why it was so important to Exeter’s existence, how it came to be re-discovered and how, after a 150 year chase, it finally came back to Exeter. Ticket holders will be sent a link for the talk in advance. If for any reason you are unable to join us on the day please purchase a ticket and email [email protected], who will be able to send you a recording of the talk after the event. Information about accessibility is available on our Access page.
