Jem Southam is a renowned British photographer based in Exeter. He has spent decades poetically documenting the landscapes of the Southwest, particularly Devon and Cornwall. Southam’s work is notable for its technical excellence and lyrical quality. His use of large-format cameras and natural light results in images that are both detailed and evocative. He often returns to the same sites over many years, capturing subtle changes in light, season and human interaction with the land.
RAMM recently acquired a selection of vintage images from four different photographic series by Jem Southam made between 1996 and 2011. The four series are Lyme Bay, The Pond at Upton Pyne, Painter’s Pool, and River Winter.
This conversation will explore each series and their unique insights into the evolving relationship between people and landscape in Exeter and East Devon.
