Conquered: Norman Exeter and Devon

In response to the arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum and to follow-up last year’s Anglo-Saxon Day, the Friends of RAMM will hold a Norman Day on Saturday 3 October at RAMM in Exeter celebrating and exploring the impact of the Normans on Exeter and Devon.

Expert speakers are:

John Allan, Cathedral Archaeologist, on Norman Exeter

Professor Ollie Creighton, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Exeter, on the Norman impact on the landscape and the economy in Devon.

Professor Sarah Hamilton, Professor of Medieval History at the University of Exeter, on Exeter’s 12th century Martyrology and the Norman impact on the church

Professor Levi Roach, Professor of Medieval History at the University of Exeter, on William’s siege of Exeter in 1068, his pacification of Devon and his charter to Leofric, Bishop of Exeter.

There will also be visits to the Cathedral Archives for an exclusive viewing of the unique Exon Domesday, the working papers for the Domesday Book in the South West. William’s charter and the Exeter Martyrology which are rarely seen will also be on view. There will also be a chance to learn more about RAMM’s collection of Norman artefacts.

An illustrated booklet will accompany the day and be a lasting record.

The day will start at 1030 and finish around 1630. Those attending will need to make their own way between RAMM and the Cathedral Archives.
