Welcome!
Please do take a couple of minutes to read the details below as it explains what you can expect from our workshops.
Our NEW Home-Ed Digital Academy is a new blend of digital skills and design skills. Some workshops focus on digital skills without a physical outcome and some focus on design skills aiming towards designing a product which we will make. See the dates and projects listings below for dates of what is happening in each workshop.
Places are very limited so booking is essential. It will not be possible to turn up without a ticket. For this workshop, participants need to be aged 8 to 16yrs. Emergency contact details will be completed during the checkout process.
Please note that we need a minimum of four people to book for the workshop to go ahead. If less than 4 tickets are sold, we will contact you and refund your payment. Participants should be dropped off at the FabLab and collected at the end of the workshop unless you give permission for them to leave without an adult collecting at the end in the checkout process.
About this Workshop:
In our workshops, our Digital Making Tutor, Marcus Brown, will briefly run through how the process works and will give a shirt demonstration pointing out some of the key design techniques needed for the session. Following this, attendees get to develop their own skills or create a design.
Design Making
Some designs will be made in the workshop and some after the workshop due to the time it takes to make them. See the dates and projects below for details about this. If we hake their design after the workshop, we will let you know by email when it is ready to be collected or we can send it to another Library in Devon or Torbay for collection. It's normally in around a week following the workshop.
Workshop Dates and Projects:
For this half-term there will be two workshops the same on each date. One is 1000-1200 and the other 1400-1600. The project in both workshops is the same.
FRI 9 JAN - 3D Design a 2026 Standing Sign that we will 3D print after the workshop. We will use a 3D Design Workshop to create their designs.
FRI 16 JAN - 2D vector-based design - design a bookmark that we will laser-engrave in plywood for their use in reading. We should make these in the workshop but if time doesn't allow then some will be made after the workshop.
FRI 23 JAN - 3D Vase Design - we will use a 3D design website and use some rotational techniques to create a small vase. We will 3D print these after the workshop and will supply a plastic tube to use in their design to hold water and some small flowers. They could also be used for dry flowers or seeds.
FRI 30 JAN - 3D Sculpting natural items e.g. flowers, seed heads, leaves. They will learn how to sculpt digitally and we will then 3D print their design following the workshop.
FRI 6 FEB - Graphic Design - design a Tote-Bag. We will use Canva to create a graphical design using layering and transparency techniques to create a vibrant design. We will print this in the workshop using dye-sublimation processes and will heat-press it onto a tote bag (on one side) for them to take home.
FRI 13 FEB - 3D Design - designing three spinning tops. We will use a new tool in a 3D design platform to create spinning tops. We will 3D print these for them to keep after the workshop in a range of colours.
A few things to note:
Refunds- our policy is no refunds. If you are unable to attend, please let us know as we are running a waiting list and, if we can resell your ticket, we will refund your ticket (but not the transaction fee). If we cannot resell your ticket then no refund will be issued. If you are unable to attend then please notify us as soon as possible and then we can 'release your ticket'.
If we have to cancel a workshop for any reason, we will refund you your payment in full.
Late Arrival - It will not be possible to join the workshop if you arrive more than 15 minutes late. By this time, we are getting into the technical content of the workshop and it's not possible to go back over what we have already covered.
Mobile Phones - Mobile phones should not be used in the workshop. It is ok for participants to have a phone with them but they must not be used in the session. If you have any further questions - please do email us at:fablab@librariesunlimited.org.uk
Appropriate Design Content - In some recent workshops I have had to say no to some image and text content attendees have selected. I mention at the start of workshops that the content must be age appropriate and not offensive or illegal. If there are any issues with this I may phone an emergency contact to check if they are happy. All of our internet delivery in the library has a filter running to minimise inappropriate content.
Additional Learning Needs - in the checkout details there is a section for you to let me know any additional needs. If your child would have support at home for their learning, it would be sensible for an adult to stay and support them.
Any questions? If so, please do email me and I will come back to you. I work part-time so it can take 2-3 days to receive a reply sometimes.
Many thanks,
Marcus Brown
