About

Welcome!

Please do take a couple of minutes to read the details below as it explains what you can expect from our workshops.

Our NEW Wednesday Workshops are a new blend of digital skills and design skills. Some workshops focus on digital skills without a physical outcome and some focus on design skills aiming towards designing a product which we will make. See the dates and projects listings below for dates of what is happening in each workshop.

Places are very limited so booking is essential. It will not be possible to turn up without a ticket. For this workshop, participants need to be aged 8 to 16yrs. Emergency contact details will be completed during the checkout process.

Please note that we need a minimum of four people to book for the workshop to go ahead. If less than 4 tickets are sold, we will contact you and refund your payment. Participants should be dropped off at the FabLab and collected at the end of the workshop unless you give permission for them to leave without an adult collecting at the end in the checkout process.

About this Workshop:
In our workshops, our Digital Making Tutor, Marcus Brown, will briefly run through how the process works and will give a short demonstration pointing out some of the key design techniques needed for the session. Following this, attendees get to develop their own skills or create a design.

Design Making
Some designs will be made in the workshop and some after the workshop due to the time it takes to make them. See the dates and projects below for details about this. If we make their design after the workshop, we will let you know by email when it is ready to be collected or we can send it to another Library in Devon or Torbay for collection. It's normally in around a week following the workshop.

Workshop Dates and Projects:

All dates are Wednesdays from 1615 - 1745. Prompt collection from the FabLab is important as Exeter Library closes promptly at 1800 on a Wednesday.

Weds 14 Jan - Create a 3D Standing 2026 sign which we will 3D print in white for your child/ren to keep. They will be printed after the workshop.

Weds 21 Jan - Create a design in Canva that we will print using dye-sublimation onto a Tote Bag. We should get them printed in the workshop to take home.

Weds 28 Jan - Create a laser-cut bookmark. Using a vector-based piece of software, they will learn how to convert images and text into vectors for cutting and engraving on our laser-cutters. We should get these made in the workshop.

Weds 4 Feb - Generative AI - creating AI images. We will use a professional website to generate their own AI images. We will discuss ethical use of generative AI and will explore different styles of image generation. Their generated images will be shared through email after the workshop.

Weds 11 Feb - Using AI within Canva to generate their own images to use on an A2 poster. We will print some posters during the workshop but time won't allow for them all to be printed. Some will be finished after the workshop.

A few things to note:
Refunds- our policy is no refunds. If you are unable to attend, please let us know as we are running a waiting list and, if we can resell your ticket, we will refund your ticket (but not the transaction fee). If we cannot resell your ticket then no refund will be issued. If you are unable to attend then please notify us as soon as possible and then we can 'release your ticket'.

If we have to cancel a workshop for any reason, we will refund you your payment in full.

Late Arrival - It will not be possible to join the workshop if you arrive more than 15 minutes late. By this time, we are getting into the technical content of the workshop and it's not possible to go back over what we have already covered.
Mobile Phones - Mobile phones should not be used in the workshop. It is ok for participants to have a phone with them but they must not be used in the session. If you have any further questions - please do email us at:fablab@librariesunlimited.org.uk

Appropriate Design Content - In some recent workshops I have had to say no to some image and text content attendees have selected. I mention at the start of workshops that the content must be age appropriate and not offensive or illegal. If there are any issues with this I may phone an emergency contact to check if they are happy. All of our internet delivery in the library has a filter running to minimise inappropriate content.

Additional Learning Needs - in the checkout details there is a section for you to let me know any additional needs. If your child would have support at home for their learning, it would be sensible for an adult to stay and support them during the workshop.

Any questions? If so, please do email me and I will come back to you. I work part-time so it can take 2-3 days to receive a reply sometimes.

Many thanks,
Marcus Brown
