The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay is coming to Exeter on Monday 4 July, to mark the coming of the Commonwealth Games in August. The Queen’s Baton Relay is a Games tradition that celebrates, connects and excites communities across the Commonwealth during the build up to the Games.
The Baton will be carried for 29 days through the length and breadth of England by thousands of Batonbearers, each with inspiring backgrounds and stories, before reaching Birmingham for the Opening Ceremony on 28 July. Before arriving in Exeter, the Baton will visit the Eden Project in Cornwall and Plymouth.
The Baton is due to arrive in Exeter at 11am on Monday 4th July, starting at Piazza Terracina on the quayside. Its journey will start on the water itself, by paddleboard along the Exeter canal basin. It will then travel alongside the river, and cross at the Cricklepit Bridge, continuing on the other side of the river before returning on the Butts Ferry floating bridge!
See the map below for the route the Queen's Baton Relay will take in Exeter.
The Queen's Baton Relay is free for spectators to come and watch, and all are welcome. Please note that timings are subject to change slightly, as the Baton is travelling to other locations across the south west before it reaches Exeter!
We encourage visitors to use public transport to reach the quayside. The Matford Park & Ride bus is convenient for visiting the quayside, or if travelling by train, St Thomas rail station is located close by. The quayside is also easy to reach on foot from Exeter city centre, and is a great place to arrive by bicycle, with flat riverside cycle paths, and plenty of cycle parking!
