Roots & Routes: Reading Place Creative Workshop

Join us to creatively explore your local neighbourhood! Be inspired by maps and photos and learn more about the past and present of St Thomas. We'll be looking at your routes and where you feel connected and 'rooted', and will create our very own walking trails through the local area, uncovering hidden gems 'west of the river'. Suitable for all ages. Materials and festive treats provided.

This workshop is part of our Proud to Be project, made possible through support from the Creative Arc Programme, an initiative funded by the University of Exeter, Exeter City Council and the UK government through the Shared Prosperity Fund.

This workshop is led byDr Sarah Spencer, an artist, art historian, and community engager whose work breaks down access barriers to arts and heritage to improve individual wellbeing and community cohesion, and to help address socio-political issues. As Director of Lightbear Lane, she takes the Visual Arts and Community lead and specialises in designing and delivering events and creative workshops in heritage and community settings, often with diverse, marginalised, and under-represented groups. She has recently worked with the University of Exeter and Exeter City Council (Proud to Be film project), St Nicholas Priory, Exeter (artist in residence; creative programmes), Headway Devon (art workshop series) Exeter UNESCO City of Literature, and the Devon and Exeter Institution (collection reviewer). Having recently completed a PhD in Art History, she is now the Curatorial Assistant at the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum and enjoys bringing her skills and experience together to increase access to arts and heritage.
