DIY Halloween Decorations - There are some amazing ideas out there, for your very own Halloween decorations:

• Blood Bath: Fill up your bath with water, add a bit of red food colouring (you may want to test that it wont stain your bath first) and if you are adventurous, throw in some fake body part in it. Has your little one taken the head off a doll, limbs off an action figure? Just throw them in! (Do this one at your own risk!)
• Hanging Bat: Cut bats out of black paper and hang them with dental floss or fishing wire around your house
• Pumpkin Vases: Found a nice big pumpkin and not too sure what to do with it? Why not paint it black, cut out the middle and turn into a vase
• Black Banners: This one is easy to do! Cut out black triangles and stick them to some black ribbon and hang them around your house. You can also weave some spider webs for added affect
• White Ghosts­: All you need for this is some white fabric you don’t mind cutting up (ie an old sheet), scissors, white yarn, tapestry needle, a black pen/black sewing pins and some tennis/foam balls. Cut your fabric in large squares (depending on how much fabric you want hanging at the bottom. Cover a tennis ball with the fabric and tie it with the string to form the head. Draw little eyes/or insert the black sewing pins. To hang them, thread and stitch the yarn with the tapestry needle at the top of each head and hang them where you wish

Wear Your Costume - Staying at home this Halloween doesn’t mean you can't get dressed up! Go on, you know you want to. Don’t want to spend too much money on costumes? Why not let your imagination run and make your own. Below are some easy ideas to start you off:

• Black Cat: You probably have everything you need to create this classic costume. You simply need a black top paired with black leggings, gloves and shoes. There are some great tutorials on how to make your own cat ears and tail on YouTube.
• Men in Black: Most of us has a black suit in the closet, pair that up with some sunnies and if you have a nerf gun - use that as your weapon of choice.
• Ghost: Come on this one is easy – you need an old white sheet, cut out some eyes and off you go, haunting the corridors of your home!

Halloween Pizzas by BBC Good Food

‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‏‏Ingredients:

• 200g strong white flour
• 200g strong wholewheat flour
• 1 tsp or 7g sachet easy-blend dried yeast
• 250ml warm water
• Alternative options - buy pizza bases or for a healthier version use wraps

For the topping:

• 300g passata
• 1 garlic clove, crushed
• 1 tbsp olive or rapeseed oil
• 75g grated mozzarella
• 10 black olives
• handful cherry tomatoes, halved
• handful basil leaves, to serve

Method:

1. Mix the flours and yeast with a pinch of salt in a food processor fitted with a dough blade, or combine in a bowl. Pour in the water and mix to a soft dough, then work for 1 min in a processor or 5 mins by hand. Remove the dough, divide into 4 pieces and roll out on a lightly floured surface to rounds about 15cm across. Lift onto heavily oiled baking sheets.
2. Mix the passata with the garlic, oil and a little seasoning. Spread over the dough to within 2cm of the edges. Scatter with the mozzarella. Halve the olives and tomatoes. Place an olive in the centre of each pizza to make the spider's body. Cut the rest into little legs and arrange them around the spider bodies. Dot the tomatoes here and there. Leave to rise for 20 mins. Heat oven to 240C/ fan 220C/gas 9 or the highest setting.
3. Bake the pizza for 10-12 mins until crisp and golden around the edges. Scatter with the basil to serve.

Spooky Witch Fingers by All Recipes (Serves 30)

‎‏‏Ingredients:

• 225g (8 oz) butter, softened
• 125g (4 1/2 oz) icing sugar
• 1 egg
• 1 teaspoon almond extract
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 350g (12 oz) plain flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 100g (4 oz) whole almonds
• 1 tube red decorating icing

Method:

1. Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder and salt, continually beating; chill for 20 to 30 minutes.
2. Preheat oven to 160 C / Gas mark 3. Lightly grease baking trays.
3. Remove dough from fridge in small amounts. Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of greaseproof paper. Use the paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped biscuit. Press one almond into one end of each biscuit to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze biscuit near the tip and again near the centre of each to give the impression of knuckles. You can also cut into the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more finger-like appearance. Arrange the shaped biscuits on the baking trays.
4. Bake in the preheated oven until the biscuits are slightly golden in colour, 20 to 25 minutes.
5. Remove the almond from the end of each biscuit; squeeze a small amount of red icing into the cavity; replace the almond to cause the icing to ooze out around the tip of the biscuit

Crispy Brains by Tesco (Serves 8)‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏

Ingredients:

• 175g (6oz) mini marshmallows
• 25g butter
• 100g (3 1/2oz) puffed rice cereal
• sunflower oil
• red writing, piping or gel icing

Method:

1. Line a baking tray with nonstick baking paper. Put the marshmallows and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water. Leave to melt, stirring occasionally.
2. Tip the cereal into a large bowl. Pour over the melted marshmallows and stir to combine – the mixture will be very sticky, but keep going until well mixed. Pour a little sunflower oil onto a plate and dip your hands in it. Shape the mixture into 8 oval brains; and put them on the prepared tray, re-greasing your hands as necessary.
3. Dip the handle of a teaspoon in oil, then press down along the centre of each cluster, creating a groove.
4. Using the red icing, drizzle or pipe squiggly lines all over the brains to represent blood vessels. Leave to set for at least 4 hours or until firm.

• Dim the lights, close your blinds/curtains and if you're brave enough - turn all the lights off!
• Create a cosy place or fort (think lots of blankets, duvets and extra pillows) – make sure everyone is comfortable and safe

Community Pumpkin Trails 

Word on the street (literally) is that within the St Thomas, Alphington and Topsham communities, people are carving their pumpkins and putting them in their windows to lift spirits of residents and visitors alike. If you're passing through the area keep an eye out for these, perhaps provide the little ones with a treat as they spot them - this could be a safe idea for trick or treating!

Pumpkin Trail at National Trust Killerton

Take an autumnal stroll around Killerton House and take part in their pumpkin trail - there are 12 pumpkins hidden around the grounds in total! If you're feeling extra brainy, see if you can answer some of the bonus questions along the way too.
