Exeter Philharmonic Choir has been making music in the city since 1846, making it one of the oldest amateur choirs in the UK. It began as the Exeter Oratorio Society, when a small group of Cathedral singers and local musicians decided to get together and perform the great works they loved.
At their first meeting in October 1846, they agreed their aim was to promote oratorios, anthems, and the finest sacred music. They didn't waste any time putting that into action. By Easter 1847 they were ready for their first concert - a performance of Messiah by George Frideric Handel - given at the Royal Subscription Rooms in what was then London Inn Square.
In those early days the membership was entirely male, but that soon changed as the choir grew in numbers and ambition. Nearly 180 years later, Exeter Philharmonic Choir is still the heart of the city's musical life, continuing the tradition started by that original group of enthusiastic singers and players.
For nearly two centuries, Exeter Philharmonic Choir has not only brought great choral music to the city but also used its performances to support good causes, helping to raise thousands of pounds for local and national charities. Whether singing in Exeter's historic buildings, or presenting special charity concerts, members are proud to use their music to make a positive difference.
Supporting charitable causes is an important part of the choir's commitment to the wider community - combining the joy of singing with the opportunity to give something back.
