About

Federico Garca Lorcas Blood Wedding is a searing Spanish tragedy centred on a bride torn between obligation and desire. Bound to an arranged marriage to her Bridegroom yet unable to extinguish her passion for former lover Leonardo Felix, she becomes the fragile link between two families whose long-standing feud refuses to remain buried. Even as her wedding day unfolds, the brides defiance of societal expectation sends her down a dangerous path, culminating in an inevitable and devastating conclusion. Inspired by true events, this enduring story exposes the collision between human longing and rigid social convention, exploring fate, gender roles, and forbidden love.

This scratch performance, presented by Exeter College Performing Arts Academy, offers audiences a first look at a work in progressa bold contemporary reimagining crafted for todays conversations and perspectives. Developed through professional workshops, original writing and collaborative devising, a company of 15 emerging theatre makers have created new material that both honours the emotional intensity of Lorcas classic and reframes it through a 21stcentury lens.

The piece preserves Lorcas blend of poetic language, stark realism and physical storytelling while exploring fresh interpretations and experimental approaches. Since September 2025, the ensemble has developed movement sequences, embodied Lorcas characters, and explored multiple retellings of Blood Wedding to shape this evolving work. Audiences are invited to experience this classic tragedy in its raw, developing formalive with experimentation, discovery, and the creative energy of the Performing Arts Academy Company.
