In the beautiful setting of Pinces Gardens in St Thomas, Exeter, Dr Sarah Spencer will introduce ways artists have historically responded to trees, and will guide you through a sensory exploration of the gardens, introducing nature-journalling techniques to foster connection to the natural world, drawing on close observation to inspire creative responses.
Dr Sarah Spencer is an artist, art historian, and community engager whose work breaks down access barriers to arts and heritage to improve individual wellbeing and community cohesion, and to help address socio-political issues. As Director of Lightbear Lane, shetakes the Visual Arts and Community lead and specialises in designing and delivering events and creative workshops in heritage, nature and community settings, often with diverse, marginalised, and underrepresented groups. She has recently worked with the University of Exeter and Exeter City Council (Proud to Be film project), St Nicholas Priory, Exeter (artist in residence; creative programmes), Headway Devon (art workshop series) Exeter UNESCO City of Literature, and the Devon and Exeter Institution (collection reviewer). Having recently completed a PhD in Art History, she is now Assistant Curator at the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum and enjoys bringing her skills and experience together to increase access to arts and heritage.
