About

Writing for Children: Three Authors, Three Approaches
What makes a great children's story? How do you write books that entertain, inspire and keep young readers turning the page?

Join three South West children's authors (Peta Hands, Chris McGuire and Tim Gambrell) for an engaging evening exploring the craft of writing for children. From laugh-out-loud adventures and reluctant readers to imaginative storytelling and creating memorable characters, each author will share their unique approach to writing for kids.

Whether you're an aspiring writer, a parent, or simply curious about what goes into creating books for young readers... this friendly discussion offers insight, inspiration and plenty of opportunities to ask questions from 3 lovely local published authors.

Featuring:

Chris McGuire; a Devon-based children's author and former TV producer whose career includes CBBC, Nickelodeon and Disney. He writes funny, fast-paced chapter books for reluctant and newly confident readers, including Crooks and Nannies and novelisations of The Raccoons. He'll talk on why reading should never feel like eating your greens, and how fun is the key to getting children hooked on books.

Peta Hands; a Devon-based author and healthcare professional whose debut children's novel, Sissy Snagertooth and Phylis, grew from writing as a creative escape during a challenging period of family illness. She is currently working on a second Sissy adventure.

Tim Gambrell; an Exeter-based writer. He has written extensively for Candy Jar Books' Doctor Who spin-off ranges since 2017, and is Range Editor for their UNIT novels and short stories. Tim has also written audio stories for Big Finish, as well as Sherlock Holmes pastiches for MX Publishing and Belanger Books. His most recent novel, UNIT: The Vaughn Supremacy, was published by Candy Jar Books in June 2026.
